JSA is working with Knox City Council in metropolitan Victoria to develop and update its Affordable Housing Strategy and Action Plan 2022-2027. Knox City Council has been involved in the affordable housing space since the 1960s, long recognising that access to safe, secure, high-quality and affordable housing is fundamental to health and wellbeing.
Median house prices in Knox have more than doubled in the decade to 2016, yet there has been no significant increase in the local supply of social housing over the period – which remains at 2% of private dwellings and below the Greater Melbourne average (2.6%). Council has previously estimated that a minimum of 1,011 social housing dwellings, or 50 new social housing dwellings per year, are needed by 2041to meet local housing need.
Through this project, JSA will identify the cohorts in greatest need of social housing, outline a strategic policy position that articulates Council’s role and capacity to influence the supply of social and affordable housing in Knox, and identify a suite of key actions to be undertaken by Council over the next five years to operationalise the strategy.
